I am so aggravated about my back!! I stretch, I use heat, I use ice, I use a foam roller, I go for a massage, I go to the chiro....what else can I do BESIDES REST??!!! REST is a four letter word when you're an avid runner, cyclist, whatever suits you athletically. I realize that since I am "maturing", it takes my body a little longer to recover. Why can't I just get over it and deal with it?
I try...I really do, but I know that I have to take an extra rest day. That's all there is to it.
So as I get ready to begin my marathon training next month, I WILL include an extra rest day. I've run 6 marathons already, so I know a few extra rest days won't kill my training.
And guess what??? The cross training: biking/pushups/tricep dips/planks are not helping my back either! Good ol' dad says I am doing TOO MUCH at an extreme!! Ok dad, maybe you're right;( Maybe I need to give up sailing?? LOL
So my fellow bloggers, there you have it. As I build up my mileage, my back is going to ache...... until I completely stop running and biking.......NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
***Any suggestions??
Updates: Brian and I are getting ready to do some serious sailing this summer:) We'll have Nancy and Adam on the boat for July 4th. Bassett's Harbor is lovely on the 4th, as fireworks go off all around in the distance in the evening. We'll do a fast sail to Martha's Vineyard for a weekend, then go for a week. Cuttyhunk may be another destination.
We decided that the drink for summer sailing.....Dark and Stormy's:)
***What do you think is a nice summer drink? Alcoholic or non-alcoholic?
G0 BRUINS!!! Please win tonight:)
I have a bad back. I've tried almost every option to cure it but wound up getting surgery. Even after the surgery I still need to pay attention to it. I'm just saying this for context.
ReplyDeleteMany believe that a common cause of back issues is a muscular imbalance. Most back rehab focuses on core exercises and stretching (especially hamstrings). An imbalance like this causes the back muscles to do too much (since the core cannot handle the load). Biking typically is good but I would check with someone regarding the planks.
I'm also old. Us geezers need more recovery. Make sure you alternate hard days with easy days in your training. Your body will thank you.
Feel better.
I am sorry to learn your back is sore. Probably your Dad is right! Don't give up sailing, though, just give up 'manning' the sheets and take over the helm. Me, I am a 'helm hog' and make The Captain do the work!
ReplyDeleteI had to Google Dark and Stormy. Sounds great! I did have an idea it would be a dark rum, but gingerbeer? That sounds gooood.
Oh, 3-0 Boston! Bobby Lu is out of the game.
You already know what my remedy is....ignore and Advil!
ReplyDeleteHave I mentioned how excited I am to go out with you guys on the 4th??? YAY!!!!!!!
